Novel formulation enhances hormonal balance in women with polycystic ovary syndrome, suggesting potential as a complementary therapy.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that leads to irregular menstruation, excessive hair growth, acne, and infertility. Treatment for PCOS aims to manage the associated symptoms and may include lifestyle changes or pharmacological interventions, such as antidiabetic agents, antiandrogens, oral contraceptives, gonadotropins, and, in some cases, laparoscopic ovarian drilling. However, these medications come with potential complications. Herbal supplements are a promising alternative. Chocolate is often considered the ultimate indulgence, and when prepared with a drug incorporated into the chocolate base, it forms a Chocolate Drug Delivery System. This system offers the potential to avoid pre-systemic elimination in the gastrointestinal tract and first-pass metabolism. Additionally, chocolate, being an anhydrous medium, prevents the growth of microorganisms and protects sensitive active ingredients from degradation due to water. Our study focuses on developing a polyherbal chocolate formulation targeting PCOS and hormonal balance. To ensure consistency throughout its shelf life, we assessed several factors, including organoleptic properties, phytochemical screening, physical stability, friability, hardness, weight variation, blooming, and moisture content. The results indicated that formulation F2 exhibited excellent organoleptic properties and stability. Thus, Widescope is available to conduct further in vivo studies using appropriate animal models.
