Observational analysis reveals GSH levels decrease with age in healthy individuals, suggesting implications for neurodegeneration.
Motivation: The glutathione (GSH) depletion and/or alterations in its metabolism in the brain are closely related to neurodegeneration diseases especially the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease. Goal(s): To characterize the effect of age and sex on the GSH in striatum in normal controls. Approach: Taking advantage of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) with MEscher-Garwood Point RESolved Spectroscopy (MEGA-PRESS) to detect GSH levels in specific brain regions. Results: In healthy populations (age range: 21-77 years), GSH levels in the left striatum showed a negative correlation with age. Impact: This study offered a baseline of GSH level in the striatum which provided a reference for further research regarding the degree of oxidative stress.
