Commentary highlights discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals in schools, advocating for better support in mathematics education.
Students and teachers with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and other marginalized sexual orientations and gender identities (LGBTQ+) experience harsh discrimination in schools and society. This discrimination has fueled attacks on their humanity and threatened their safety in mathematics classrooms. Consequently, advocacy for marginalized groups has become increasingly important among mathematics educators in this challenging political climate. This commentary is a clarion call for mathematics educators to better support LGBTQ+ students and teachers. In doing so, it heightens awareness and expands conversations about advocating for LGBTQ+ students and teachers in mathematics education.
