Excavation reveals insights into the burial structure and associated artifacts, indicating a significant archaeological find.
In August 2015, a trial excavation was conducted in and around a burial structure at H orbat Ha-Gardi (Permit No. A-7490; map ref. 19960–80/64910–20; Fig. 1), part of an IAA initiative to determine whether the site is the postulated Tomb of the Maccabees. The excavation, on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority, was directed by A. Re’em and D. Shachar, with the assistance of A. Hajian, V. Essman, M. Kipnis and Y. Shmidov (surveying, drafting and graphic reconstruction), A. Peretz (field photography), D. Porotsky (plans), Sky View Ltd. (aerial photography), A. de Vincenz (pottery; see Appendix 1), E. Boaretto (14C dating), T. Winter (glass), R. Kool (numismatics; see Appendix 2), L. Habas (mosaics), O. Peleg-Barkat (architecture), L. Di Segni (Christian history of the site), E. Ayalon (agricultural installations), A. Van-Zuiden (plaster and bonding materials), E. Tirosh (World War I), A. Shimron (geology), as well as many archaeologists and specialists in various disciplines who visited the site and offered their opinion. Special thanks are due to the volunteers and local residents who helped in the excavation and fully shared the challenges presented by the research questions of the site, and in particular to D. Derman and A. Velinsky. Special thanks to Z. Bar‘am, the powerhouse behind the present initiative.
