Abstract Improvement cuttings were made in a 32-year-old, even-aged, mixed oak stand in south central Pennsylvania to favor yellow-poplar. Periodic measurements to age 78 indicate that yellow-poplar basal area and net volume were closely related to degree of release. Rate of mortality was inversely related to treatment intensity until age 58, when mortality rate accelerated on thinned and control plots.
