The investigation deals with the issues of teaching Oriental languages as part of the national policy of the Russian Empire in the 19th - early 20th century. The problems in the development of Oriental linguistics are traced using the example of boy’s gymnasiums of the Kazan educational district. Education, which became an important part of the development of the state in the 19th century, implied the cultural integration of all the peoples of the Russian Empire into the educational system. The process of development of teaching Oriental languages in classical gymnasiums of the Kazan educational district is analyzed. Today, the Volga region, especially the Lower Volga region, remains an important element of Russia’s interaction with the Caspian states, which is as important in the context of education as it is in the field of industry. This determines the relevance of the research topic.
