**Abstract** In this personal essay, I share my experience with institutional violence in higher education. The experience bent time and changed me. It emboldened and frightened me. I share this story to let others know they are not alone and that institutional violence can happen to any of us, at any career stage. I want people to be unafraid to speak because it is in our collective story sharing that we will find strength and the power to change our institutions.
