Significance Thirteen candidates made the March 25 deadline. This did not include Corina Yoris, nominated three days previously by Maria Corina Machado, the disqualified candidate of the opposition Unitary Platform (UP). The decision by individual parties within the UP to register their own candidates has been read as a direct challenge to Machado’s leadership and could rupture fragile opposition unity. Impacts The vast majority of the 13 registered opposition candidates will have no chance of electoral success. The US threat to reimpose sanctions when General Licence 44 expires this month has limited leverage with the government. Washington will need to act cautiously in order not to skew opposition strategy once again.
