Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems are widely used in modern Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) installations due to their energy efficiency and ease of installation. However, refrigerant leakage in these systems is a significant concern, given their long refrigerant lines and the use of flare fitting connections. This paper presents an advanced approach to detecting refrigerant leakage in VRF systems using pressure-based techniques combined with Molecular Property Spectrometer (MPS) sensors. The proposed method offers fast, accurate, and reliable refrigerant leak detection, which can significantly reduce the environmental impact and improve the overall performance of VRF systems. They are prone to refrigerant leaks, which can stem from various sources such as improper installation, factory defects, mechanical wear from vibration, or physical damage. Leak detection in these systems is particularly challenging due to their long refrigerant lines and the use of flare fitting connections. The innovative, application-specific design of these advanced sensors ensures that field calibration is not required, making them suitable for both fixed and portable instruments.
