Many design-related departments in colleges encourage their students to participate in international design competitions in order to accumulate design experience. In these design competitions, poster works are considered to be one of the most artistic design projects, in which color is the most eye-catching element when viewed from a distance. In Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC), the topic always varies every year, and therefore the present study explores the relationship between color and the topic. Particularly, we analyze the relationship between three color attributes (i.e., Hue, Value, and Chroma) and five color matching principles (i.e., Monochromatic, Analogous, Contrast, Complementary, and Ambiguous) of the poster works with the Visual Design category of the TISDC from 2008 to 2022 by using the ``content analysis method''. The samples selected for our study are generally those design works with neutral colors, high brightness and low color intensity. Based on the analysis, it is found that the color application method is generally related to the ``topic'', and consequently it is suggested that designers can think about the design based on the ``topic'' in terms of color application and use the monochromatic and contrast so that the visual balance in the design can be achieved.
