Evaluation shows molecular iodine is effective for individual metals, while copper compounds offer advantages for alloys.
The molecular iodine and copper (II) compounds as oxidizers of metals and alloys in acidic media were evaluated at temperatures of 22±5 °С. The comparison was carried out according to their efficiency in the direct branch of the macrocyclic stage, selectivity for salts as resulting product, the presence and nature of by-product and their relative quantity, a range of used additional oxidants and their activity, a number and products of reduction, requirements to the solubility of reagents and products of reaction, etc. It has been proved that the use of J2 is more appropriate in the oxidation of individual metals to obtain a specific salt as a base product. In oxidation of alloys in many cases, copper compounds (II) are more advantageous.
