Investigation reveals dehydration alters spectral parameters in an iron complex, suggesting unique characteristics after heating.
The article presents the results of the study of the dehydration of the hydrate of the neutral spin-crossover (S = 5/2 ↔ S = 1/2) complex [Fe(Hthpy)(thpy)]· HO (1) based on pyruvic acid thiosemicarbazone ligand (Hthpy) using the temperature-dependent gamma-resonance spectroscopy on ⁵⁷Fe nuclei. It is suggested for the first time that the release of water from the structure of polycrystalline sample 1 in the temperature range of 92–160 °C is associated with the formation of the neutral complex [Fe(Hthpy)] (3) stabilized in the high-spin state ( = 2). A comparative analysis of the spectral parameters of complex 1 and the anhydrous neutral spin-crossover complex [Fe(Hthpy)(thpy)] (2) reveals that 2 retains its spectral characteristics when heated in air in a similar temperature range.
