Prospective RCT reveals superior stone-free rates and ergonomic advantages of thulium fiber laser.
The current manuscript represents a prospective randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing the utility and efficacy of two laser devices: a thulium fiber laser (TFL) generator (Olympus® SOLTIVE SuperPulsed) and a high-power Holmium:YAG (Ho:YAG) generator (Boston Scientific®, Lumenis Pulse® 120H with MOSES 2.0 technology), respectively. The authors must be complimented for the well-designed study, the detailed presentation of their methodology and the inclusion of a relaitively large sample size (83 patients) with comparable demographic characteristics between the two groups. The primary outcome of this RCT was the comparison of stone-free rates (SFR) between the two laser technologies. However, very interesting results arise from the secondary outcomes, where the authors investigate aspects that are not routinely reported in similar studies, such as laser ergonomics, surgeons’ satisfaction rates and noise levels.
