Research analyzes soil samples to identify ancient plants and agricultural practices in Maui, suggesting historical land use.
Samples from two sites 50-50-14-AA1910-002 (AA1910–002) and 50-50-14-07087 (SIHP–7087) were examined as part of the Makena ATC, Phase II South Project on Maui. These habitation and agricultural complex sites include Precontact, Late Precontact, and Early Historic occupation. Samples were submitted for pollen, phytolith, and starch analyses, and botanical identification of a possible tuber or corm.
