Reanalysis predicts average wave overtopping rates in vertical structures, suggesting improved design parameters.
This study presents the prediction formulae for average wave overtopping rate for the simple vertical structures with a foreshore slope, based on a series of 2D hydraulic model tests. The experimental results reported by Kim and Lee (2015) were reanalyzed with the similar framework of EurOtop (2018) and revised average overtopping formulae are suggested. When analyzing the average wave overtopping data, the impulsive and nonimpulsive wave conditions were separated, and suggests (i) mean average overtopping rate (mean value approach) and (ii) design approach accounting for one standard deviation of average value. In particular, for non-impulsive conditions, the EurOtop (2018) formulation is improved by incorporating wave steepness and relative wave height, enabling the influence of wave period on average overtopping rate to be considered.
