Investigation reveals algal zonation and biomass in a coastal ecosystem, suggesting important ecological dynamics.
The algal biomass and zonation of a typical rocky shore along the Bay of Fundy at Black Rock, Kings County, Nova Scotia was investigated. Collections and data were obtained during May and June, 1978. Biomass estimates, based on carbon weight, are presented in statistical format. The sample mean carbon weight of all species was 23.080±45.425 grams per quarter meter squared. The algal zonation for each species considered is presented as the mean vertical height above chart datum, plus or minus the appropriate standard deviation. A total of 12 species were collected from 29 quadrats in the littoral zone. Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. comprised 91.7% of total wet weight (biomass) and 91.5% total carbon weight.
