Digital adoption and infrastructure modernization in government public libraries in Bangladesh

This study aims to explore the digital transformation of government public libraries in Bangladesh, focusing on assessing the current state of technology adoption, infrastructure, and digital literacy. A descriptive research design was used, surveying 59 library professionals from 48 government public libraries across Bangladesh. The findings reveal a significant reliance on manual systems, with over 80% of libraries still using traditional methods and limited automation. The study also highlights the lack of digital infrastructure, including library management software and RFID technology, as key barriers to digital adoption. Emerging technologies, such as AI, blockchain, and IoT, hold transformative potential for enhancing library services; however, their implementation in Bangladesh is still in its early stages. The implications of this study suggest the need for policy reforms that prioritize digital infrastructure, investment in digital literacy programs for library staff, and fostering partnerships with technology providers. The study provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of modernizing public libraries in Bangladesh, offering actionable recommendations for policymakers and library administrators to bridge the digital divide. The findings underscore the importance of external collaborations and a multi-faceted approach to drive sustainable digital transformation in libraries.
