The tail-cuff method is commonly used to measure blood pressure in rats. We examined two types of tailcuff devices, the BP98AL and UR5000 in hypertensive rats. Indirect systolic blood pressure( SBP) measured using the tail-cuff method with the BP98AL correlated well with the SBP recorded with the UR5000. The SBP recorded using BP98AL was significantly lower than that measured using UR5000 in male spontaneously hypertensive rats, stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats, and normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats at 8 weeks of age. These results will be useful for indirectly determining SBP in long-term studies using hypertensive rats.
