Is umbilical cord blood adiponectin associated with LDL-C, HDL-C, or ethnicity at birth?
Is umbilical cord blood adiponectin associated with LDL-C, HDL-C, or ethnicity at birth?
Cord blood adiponectin is inversely related to LDL-C at birth, suggesting an early role in lipid metabolism, though ethnic differences and HDL-C associations seen in adults are not yet present.
Supports early adiponectin-lipid link at birth; leaves open later HDL-C and ethnic associations.
This is the first report of an inverse relationship between cord adiponectin and LDL-C at birth. In contrast to adult studies, we found no significant association between adiponectin and HDL-C in cord blood. Our results and the strong independent association between adiponectin and HDL-C observed in adult studies suggest a role for adiponectin in lipid metabolism. Ethnic differences in adiponectin may arise after birth.
