What are the left atrial structural and functional changes in patients with early-stage HFpEF?
Patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) in early stage of diastolic dysfunction (DD)
Left atrial (LA) structural and functional changes (LA emptying fraction, LA mass, LAV min, and LA dyssynchrony)surrogate
Early left atrial functional deterioration occurs in HFpEF patients even when LA cavity dimensions appear normal, suggesting a need for early optimal therapy.
In early stage of DD, in patients with HFpEF, in addition to LV hypertrophy and compromised LV longitudinal systolic function, the LA emptying fraction is reduced, LA mass and LAV min are increased and LA dyssynchrony is significant, despite normal LA dimensions. These findings suggest early LA function deterioration irrespective of normal cavity measurements, hence a need for optimum therapy.
