Ground Penetrating Radar survey unveils ancient foundations and subsurface features in Histon, revealing historical context.
Staploe Archaeology Group was invited by Histon and Impington Archaeology Group to undertake a Ground Penetrating Radar survey over the site of the former church of St Etheldreda in order to understand the reason for continuing subsidence at the western edge of the site. An area of 40x20m was surveyed and the data analysed using ReflexW software (Version 10.1). The GPR survey was successfully completed across the known site of the church indicating the existence of wall foundations remaining in situ. Radar anomalies of the nave, chancel and aisles were identified, as well as an area to the west of the site consistent with deeper quarrying for building material suggesting this was the probable site of a tower.
