Case report shows tardive dyskinesia caused by risperidone in an adolescent with intellectual disability, implying potential risk for long-term users.
Risperidone is an effective antipsychotic commonly used for behavioral problems in children with intellectual disability. Several studies confirm its effectiveness for up to one year, but long-term use is associated with adverse effects such as dyskinesia, akathisia, and parkinsonism. Furthermore, risperidone can cause tardive dyskinesia (TD) in certain patients, especially children with intellectual disability who are more likely to experience side effects of antipsychotics.
