The relation between body weight and mortal- ity, particularly from cardiovascular disease and diabetes, is well established (Society of Actuaries, 1959; Preston and Clarke, 1966). A reliable, practicable, and generally acceptable index of obesity would therefore have important epidemiological, actuarial, and clinical applications; but many difficulties stand in the way of providing such an index.
