CEUS and MVFI assess carotid plaque instability by visualizing intraplaque neovascularization and micro-ulcers.
Why the study?
Carotid plaque destabilization is a major mechanism of cerebral infarction, making the establishment of non-invasive evaluation methods crucial for stroke prevention.
Advanced ultrasound techniques such as CEUS and MVFI enhance the non-invasive evaluation of carotid plaque vulnerability, which is crucial for stroke prevention.
May enhance bedside detection of vulnerable carotid plaques; leaves open prospective validation against stroke events.

Kozue SAITOU (2026) conducted a review in Carotid plaque instability. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and microvascular flow imaging (MVFI) was evaluated. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound and microvascular flow imaging enable detailed evaluation of carotid plaque instability by visualizing intraplaque neovascularization and micro-ulcers.
