Key result
Contrast-enhanced CT numbers were significantly lower in unstable carotid plaques (35.4 HU) compared to stable plaques (80.2 HU) defined by BB-MRI, showing a significant negative correlation.
Why the study?
Does contrast-enhanced CT correlate with black blood MRI in evaluating carotid artery plaques in patients with severe carotid artery stenosis?
Observational (n=35)
No
Does contrast-enhanced CT correlate with black blood MRI in evaluating carotid artery plaques in patients with severe carotid artery stenosis?
Absolute Event Rate: 35.4% vs 80.2%
p-value: p=0.0003
Contrast-enhanced CT correlates well with black blood MRI for evaluating carotid artery plaques and can serve as a useful adjunctive diagnostic tool when MRI is contraindicated.
May support contrast-enhanced CT for plaque assessment when MRI unavailable; leaves open prospective outcome validation.

Inukai et al. (2010) conducted an observational in Carotid artery stenosis (n=35). Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CE-CT) vs. Black-blood magnetic resonance imaging (BB-MRI) was evaluated on Average CT number (HU) in unstable versus stable plaque groups defined by BB-MRI (p=0.0003). Contrast-enhanced CT numbers were significantly lower in unstable carotid plaques (35.4 HU) compared to stable plaques (80.2 HU) defined by BB-MRI, showing a significant negative correlation.
