Research shows pulsed carbon ion beam alters surface features in W-Cu pseudo-alloy, indicating potential applications.
Surface topography of the W–Cu pseudo-alloy irradiated with a powerful pulsed ion beam at the TEMP accelerator of Tomsk Polytechnic University (Cn+ ion beam, accelerating voltage of 200 ± 10 kV, beam energy density in pulse of 2.5–3 J/cm2, pulse duration of ∼100 ns) is studied using scanning electron microscopy methods. Copper columns are revealed on the surface of copper phase, many of them have a ball-shaped apex. The number of microcracks on the surface of the tungsten framework grains is minimal.
