Left ventricular dilation in hemodialysis patients links to ~7% lower LVEF and reduced torsion.
Why the study?
LV torsion is known to contribute to LVEF, but its role along with LV enlargement in hemodialysis patients had not been investigated.
How does left ventricular enlargement affect LV torsion and LVEF in hemodialysis patients?
Observational (n=98)
No
How does left ventricular enlargement affect LV torsion and LVEF in hemodialysis patients?
Absolute Event Rate: 57% vs 64%
p-value: p=<0.05
In hemodialysis patients, left ventricular enlargement is associated with impaired epicardial torsion and reduced LVEF, highlighting the importance of volume control to prevent heart failure.
LV dilation associates with lower LVEF and torsion in hemodialysis; hypothesis-generating, prospective studies needed before clinical adoption.

TAKAI et al. (2019) conducted an observational in Hemodialysis (n=98). Hemodialysis with left ventricular dilation vs. Hemodialysis without left ventricular dilation was evaluated on Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (p=<0.05). Hemodialysis patients with left ventricular dilation had significantly reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (57% vs 64%) and torsion compared to hemodialysis patients without dilation.
