In June 2009, ARCUS were commissioned by Severn Trent Water to undertake an archaeological watching brief on a site at Breamfield Pump, Newhaven, Derbyshire (SK163 595). A requirement for the watching brief was due to the significant archaeological remains that have been identified in, and/or recovered from, an area where the pipeline route was located. The scope of works consisted of a photographic recording of two dry-stone walls prior to their partial demolition, followed by a monitoring of groundworks associated with the laying of the duplicate pipeline across the enclosed fields between Newhaven DSR and the A515. No archaeological features or deposits were recorded in the pipe trench. Artefactual material from the wall construction trenches dates to the late 18th and 19th centuries, and comprised pottery and glass.
