Key result
High-dose epoprostenol reduces vascular resistance and improves ventricular function in dogs with chronic PH.
Why the study?
Pulmonary hypertension is a life-threatening complication in dogs with cardiopulmonary disease, but the efficacy of the intravenous pulmonary vasodilator epoprostenol remains unknown in dogs.
Do epoprostenol and other intravenous cardiac drugs improve cardiovascular hemodynamics in canine models of chronic pulmonary hypertension?
Comparison
Sequential infusion of epoprostenol, dobutamine, dopamine, and pimobendan vs pre-infusion baseline
Design
Preclinical animal model study

Do epoprostenol and other intravenous cardiac drugs improve cardiovascular hemodynamics in canine models of chronic pulmonary hypertension?
In a canine model of chronic pulmonary hypertension, epoprostenol and pimobendan improved ventricular function without worsening pulmonary pressures, whereas catecholamines (dobutamine and dopamine) increased pulmonary arterial pressure.
Yuchi et al. (2023) studied Chronic pulmonary hypertension (n=6). Epoprostenol, dobutamine, dopamine, and pimobendan vs. Baseline (before infusion) was evaluated on Cardiovascular effects (pulmonary arterial pressure, vascular resistance, ventricular function). High-dose epoprostenol (15-20 ng/kg/min) significantly decreased pulmonary and systemic vascular resistance and increased ventricular function in dogs with chronic pulmonary hypertension.
