Non-invasive FFR via computational fluid dynamics aims to evaluate stenosis severity without invasive angiograms.
Why the study?
Traditional fractional flow reserve measurement requires an expensive, invasive catheter probe, motivating a non-invasive computational fluid dynamics approach to assess coronary artery stenosis.
Does non-invasive computation of Fractional Flow Reserve using Computational Fluid Dynamics accurately diagnose the severity of coronary artery stenosis compared to traditional invasive FFR?
Does non-invasive computation of Fractional Flow Reserve using Computational Fluid Dynamics accurately diagnose the severity of coronary artery stenosis compared to traditional invasive FFR?
Computational fluid dynamics is proposed as a non-invasive method to calculate fractional flow reserve, potentially avoiding the need for invasive coronary angiography.
Atherosclerosis has become one of the most common health problems in today's lifestyle. Our focus is on Coronary Artery Stenosis. Coronary Artery Stenosis is caused by narrowing of arteries, when there is formation of plaque on the walls of Coronary Artery. If not diagnosed at the early stage, the blockage could advance and might lead to stroke or even death. To diagnose the severity of stenosis, Fractional flow Reserve (FFR) value is taken into consideration. FFR value represents the amount of flow that could be achieved despite the presence of stenosis in the artery. Traditionally, FFR is measured using a specialized probe inserted through a catheter tube, and the technique is expensive. In our proposed work we tend to compute the FFR value through the non-invasive method by utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). FFR value could be calculated by the ratio of distal and proximal pressures to the stenosis. Improved Diagnostic Accuracy can be obtained by using the Computational Fluid Dynamics method. This could help the physician determine whether the patient requires angioplasty or not. As the proposed measurement is by non-invasive method, the patient can avoid Coronary Angiogram which is a painstaking process

Sarma et al. (2022) studied Coronary Artery Stenosis. Computed fractional flow reserve using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) vs. Traditional invasive FFR measurement was evaluated on Diagnostic accuracy. Non-invasive computation of fractional flow reserve using Computational Fluid Dynamics is proposed to evaluate coronary artery stenosis severity and avoid invasive coronary angiograms.
