Analysis clarifies the role of Lorentz force in energy conversion processes in MHD generators, addressing misconceptions.
To clarify the role of the Lorentz force and the mechanism of magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) power generation, and to address students' misconceptions regarding nonelectrostatic-force work and energy conversion, this paper analyzes the power-generation process of MHD generators on the basis of high school physics curriculum standards and textbooks. The role of the Lorentz force acting on charged particles in a magnetic field is examined, and the output voltage is derived using the generalized Ohm's law. The results show that the Lorentz force does not directly participate in energy conversion; rather, it only causes the separation of positive and negative charges by changing their direction of motion. The electrostatic force does negative work, thereby converting part of the kinetic energy of the plasma into electrical energy. The electromotive force is given by ε=Bdv (where B is the magnetic flux density, v is the plasma velocity, and d is the distance between the plates), and the output voltage depends on multiple factors. The analysis further indicates that electromotive force may originate either from work done by external forces or directly from internal energy.
