4D flow CMR accurately quantifies trans-valvular flow in AF without significant stroke volume bias.
Why the study?
The role of 4D flow cardiovascular MRI in assessing trans-valvular flow in patients with AF had not previously been assessed.
Does 4D flow cardiovascular MRI accurately quantify trans-valvular flow in patients with atrial fibrillation compared to healthy controls?
Cross-Sectional (n=18)
No
Does 4D flow cardiovascular MRI accurately quantify trans-valvular flow in patients with atrial fibrillation compared to healthy controls?
Absolute Event Rate: 1.64% vs -4.8%
p-value: p=0.56
4D flow cardiovascular MRI is feasible and provides internally consistent quantification of trans-valvular flow in patients with rate-controlled atrial fibrillation.

Supports 4D flow CMR feasibility for flow quantification in AF; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.
Mills et al. (2021) conducted a cross-sectional in Atrial fibrillation (n=18). 4D flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging vs. Healthy controls in sinus rhythm was evaluated on Bias between aortic valve and mitral valve stroke volumes (95% CI -4.7 to 7.94, p=0.56). Four-dimensional flow cardiovascular MRI is feasible and allows accurate quantification of trans-valvular flow in patients with atrial fibrillation, demonstrating no significant bias between aortic and mitral valve stroke volumes (bias 1.64 ml, P=0.56).
