I. INTRODUCTION|A. Scope of the Review Nucleic acid components play central roles in biochemistry. The purine and pyrimidine base pairs are the chemical basis of the nucleic acids and their composition is of basic interest in genetic and other biomedical studies. In addition, nucleotides, nucleosides, or their bases are important as regulators in metabolic processes, as messengers and as antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents.
