Key result
Elevated monocyte/HDL ratio is strongly linked to LAA thrombus in acute ischemic stroke.
Why the study?
Monocyte/HDL ratio is an inflammatory marker associated with cardiovascular conditions, but its association with left atrial appendage thrombus formation in patients with acute ischemic stroke remained to be elucidated.

Is elevated Monocyte/HDL ratio associated with left atrial appendage thrombus formation in patients with acute ischemic stroke?
Absolute Event Rate: 0.59% vs 0.22%
p-value: p=<0.001
Elevated monocyte/HDL ratio is significantly associated with left atrial appendage thrombus formation and spontaneous echo contrast in patients with acute ischemic stroke, suggesting a role for inflammation in atrial thrombogenesis.
May aid LAA thrombus risk stratification in acute stroke; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation before practice change.
Objective: There is an apparent link between thrombus formation and inflammation. Monocyte/HDL ratio (MHR) has been determined as an inflammatory marker and associated with many cardiovascular disorders like coronary artery disease, acute coronary stent thrombus, coronary thrombus burden and atrial fibrillation (AF). The purpose of this study was to elucidate the association between MHR and left atrial appendage thrombus formation (AATF) in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Methods: A total of 69 patients with the diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke were retrospectively enrolled in the study. Demographic, clinical and echocardiographic data were collected retrospectively from the patients’ records. MHR and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were calculated from the present laboratory data. Results: There was a significant positive correlation between MHR and NLR (r=0.6; p

Çetin et al. (2023) conducted an observational in Acute Ischemic Stroke (n=69). Monocyte/HDL ratio (MHR) vs. Patients without left atrial appendage thrombus or spontaneous echo contrast was evaluated on Monocyte/HDL ratio (MHR) (p=<0.001). Monocyte/HDL ratio was significantly higher in acute ischemic stroke patients with left atrial appendage thrombus formation compared to those without thrombus (0.59 vs 0.22, p<0.001).
