His bundle pacing and bundle area pacing are emerging physiological pacing modalities that aim to improve upon traditional right ventricular apical pacing for nonreversible bradycardia.
Why the study?
Long-term RV apical pacing has deleterious effects, prompting interest in physiological pacing modalities such as His bundle pacing and bundle area pacing to mobilize the intrinsic conduction system.
Does His bundle pacing and bundle area pacing improve electrophysiological performance and clinical outcomes compared to traditional RV apical pacing in patients with nonreversible bradycardia?
Does His bundle pacing and bundle area pacing improve electrophysiological performance and clinical outcomes compared to traditional RV apical pacing in patients with nonreversible bradycardia?
His bundle pacing and bundle area pacing are emerging physiological pacing modalities that may offer better electrophysiological performance compared to traditional right ventricular apical pacing.
May offer better performance in bradycardia; leaves open confirmation of clinical superiority versus RV apical pacing in prospective trials.
Cardiac pacing remains the only definitive therapy for nonreversible bradycardia. The deleterious effects of long-term right ventricular (RV) apical pacing have been well recognized. Physiological pacing is to mobilize the intrinsic conduction system as much as possible or mimics a full cycle of atrioventricular activation and would provide an optimal clinical outcome and improve traditional RV apical and cardiac resynchronization therapy biventricular pacing modalities. His bundle pacing (HBP) and bundle area pacing are emerging modalities for a possible better electrophysiological performance. In this review, definition, characteristics, and evidence on the advantages or disadvantages of HBP and its alternatives are discussed.

Li et al. (2022) conducted a review in Nonreversible bradycardia. His bundle pacing (HBP) and bundle area pacing vs. Right ventricular (RV) apical pacing was evaluated. His bundle pacing and bundle area pacing are emerging physiological pacing modalities that aim to improve upon traditional right ventricular apical pacing for nonreversible bradycardia.
