Interleukin-6 knockout protects against aging-related cardiac dysfunction in mice by reversing macrophage differentiation imbalance and reducing cardiomyocyte apoptosis.
. Furthermore, the mRNA expression of both aging markers and apoptosis-related markers was markedly inhibited by IL-6 KO. Our results suggest that aging can be significantly reversed by IL-6 KO and that the mechanisms of this effect are related to alleviation of Mø1/Mø2 imbalance and protection against apoptosis in cardiomyocytes.

Wang et al. (2020) studied Cardiac aging and dysfunction (n=114). Interleukin-6 (IL-6) knockout vs. Wild-type (WT) mice was evaluated on Cardiac dysfunction, macrophage differentiation, and cardiomyocyte apoptosis (p=<0.05). Interleukin-6 knockout significantly alleviated aging-related cardiac dysfunction, reversed macrophage differentiation imbalance, and protected against cardiomyocyte apoptosis in aging mice.
