Key result
In mild-to-moderate hypertensive patients, visit-to-visit blood pressure variability did not differ substantially between calcium antagonist and beta-blocker treatment over 4 years.
Why the study?
Does lacidipine compared to atenolol reduce visit-to-visit blood pressure variability in mild-to-moderate hypertensive patients?
Population
Mild-to-moderate hypertensive patients from the European Lacidipine Study on Atherosclerosis (ELSA) trial
Comparison
Lacidipine (calcium antagonist) for 4 years vs Atenolol (beta-blocker) for 4 years

Does lacidipine compared to atenolol reduce visit-to-visit blood pressure variability in mild-to-moderate hypertensive patients?
In mild-to-moderate hypertension, visit-to-visit blood pressure variability does not differ substantially between beta-blocker and calcium antagonist treatments.
Mancia et al. (2012) conducted an RCT in Mild-to-moderate hypertension. Lacidipine (calcium antagonist) vs. Atenolol (beta-blocker) was evaluated on Visit-to-visit intraindividual variations of clinic and 24-h mean blood pressure. In mild-to-moderate hypertensive patients, visit-to-visit blood pressure variability did not differ substantially between calcium antagonist and beta-blocker treatment over 4 years.
