Key Result

Chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary intervention achieved a 91% procedural success rate (50 of 55 cases) despite a high prevalence of complex lesions.

Key Points

  • The research aimed to assess angiographic and procedural outcomes of CTO-PCI in a South Asian population.
  • Retrospective study conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan
  • Evaluated 55 patients with chronic total occlusion from January 2020 to December 2022
  • Analyzed outcomes based on left ventricular ejection fraction and complex lesions
  • Successful CTO-PCI in 50 cases (91%) among the evaluated cohort
  • No significant differences in outcomes between successful and unsuccessful cases
  • High prevalence of complex lesions with elevated J-CTO scores

Structured PICO

What are the procedural and in-hospital outcomes of CTO-PCI in a South Asian population?

P
Population
55 patients with at least one identified chronic total occlusion undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention, evaluated for in-hospital outcomes.
E
Exposure
Percutaneous coronary intervention for chronic total occlusion (CTO-PCI)
O
Outcome
Angiographic, procedural, and in-hospital outcomes

CTO-PCI can be performed with a high success rate (91%) in a South Asian population despite a high prevalence of complex lesions.

Abstract

This retrospective study evaluated angiographic, procedural, and in-hospital outcomes of chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary intervention (CTO-PCI) at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan, from January 2020 to December 2022. Among 55 patients with at least one identified CTO, 38 presented with low left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and 17 with normal LVEF. Despite a high prevalence of complex lesions (elevated J-CTO scores), the procedure was successful in 50 cases (91%). There were no significant diffe-rences in outcomes between successful and unsuccessful CTO-PCI cases relative to the studied variables. Key Words: Chronic total occlusion, Left ventricular ejection fraction, Percutaneous coronary intervention outcomes.

Khan et al. (2026) conducted an observational in Chronic total occlusion (n=55). Chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary intervention (CTO-PCI) vs. Unsuccessful CTO-PCI was evaluated on Procedural success. Chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary intervention achieved a 91% procedural success rate (50 of 55 cases) despite a high prevalence of complex lesions.
