465 nondiabetic Japanese Americans aged 34-75 years were studied at baseline and followed for 5-10 years.
Diabetes status was assessed using the 75-g oral glucose tolerance test and compared against a clinical model including various risk factors.
Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves evaluated the predictive validity of the clinical model, fasting plasma glucose, and 2-h glucose.
For subjects aged ≤55 years, the clinical model had a ROC curve area of 0.896, which was better than FPG (0.776, P=0.008).
For older subjects, the 2-h glucose ROC area (0.792) was superior to the clinical model (0.599, P≤0.001).
At 10 years, no significant differences were observed in prediction accuracy among the clinical model, FPG, and 2-h glucose in either age group.
