Qualitative research examines Âşık Veysel’s transcendent music in diverse cultural contexts, highlighting its impact.
This study aims to examine Âşık Veysel not merely as a prominent folk poet within the borders of Türkiye, but as a cultural figure whose music transcends time, geography, and musical genres. Emerging from the âşıklık tradition rooted in Sivas, Âşık Veysel’s musical and poetic language has been reinterpreted over time within Turkish folk music as well as popular, Anatolian rock, and contemporary musical forms. With the expansion of digital media, his works have also reached international audiences and musicians. The study explores how Âşık Veysel’s music has been transformed and recontextualized in these diverse settings. Employing qualitative research methods, the study draws upon relevant literature, narratives of interviewed musicians, and analyses of musical performances circulated through digital platforms. Case examples from Greece and Israel demonstrate that Âşık Veysel’s music has found pedagogical, aesthetic, and philosophical resonance within different cultural environments. The findings suggest that Âşık Veysel developed a distinctive musical expression that is not confined to a single genre but can be articulated through various musical languages. In this respect, Âşık Veysel represents the enduring and adaptive nature of the âşıklık tradition, maintaining its vitality and creative potential in contemporary and transnational contexts.
