Abstract Introduction Hypertension (HTN) is one of the leading modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease (CHD). Understanding its population burden and the extent to which it coexists with CHD is essential for planning effective preventive strategies, particularly in the context of ageing European societies. Objective To assess the prevalence of diagnosed hypertension in Poland between 2018 and 2022 and to determine the frequency of coexisting coronary heart disease in this population. Methods We conducted a nationwide analysis based on administrative data from the National Health Fund, covering all publicly financed healthcare services. Hypertension was identified using ICD-10 codes I10–I15, and CHD using codes I20–I25. All analyses were performed for the entire Polish population with recorded diagnoses during the study period. Results Between 2018 and 2022, the number of individuals with diagnosed hypertension ranged from 10.9 to 11.0 million. Prevalence in children (18 years) was stable at 0.5%, 0.5%, 0.5%, 0.4% and 0.4% (p0.001), while among adults it increased slightly from 34.4% to 35.2% (p0.001). In 2022, the mean age of patients with hypertension was 66.2 ± 14.1 years in women and 60.8 ± 14.8 years in men (p0.001). Coronary heart disease coexisted in 28.4% of hypertensive patients (3,103,846 individuals), significantly more often than in those without hypertension (1.3%; p0.001). The highest prevalence of CHD among hypertensive individuals was observed in those aged ≥65 years (43.2%). CHD prevalence was similar in men and women (28.31% vs. 28.38%; p=NS). Conclusions In 2022, nearly 11 million people in Poland had diagnosed hypertension, with over 3 million also affected by coexisting CHD. These findings highlight the substantial population burden of hypertension and its cardiovascular consequences, underscoring the need for strengthened preventive strategies across Europe. Given demographic ageing and increasing multimorbidity, the integration of hypertension management within broader cardiovascular prevention frameworks remains a key public health priority.
