Evaluates grants effect on accounting curriculum changes in universities, suggesting enhanced student readiness for careers.
This article discusses the grants awarded by the U.S. Accounting Education Change Commission (AECC) to various universities imparting accounting education. The School of Accountancy (SOA) at Brigham Young University (BYU) is one of five schools recently awarded grants by the AECC to fund changes in accounting education. Starting in September of 1989, a committee (called the SOA Change Committee) was formed consisting primarily of members of the faculty in the SOA. This committee began meeting on a bi-weekly basis to discuss the state of the accounting curriculum and determine whether changes in the curriculum were necessary. The Accounting Faculty at Kansas State University (KSU) will implement major accounting curriculum revisions so that their graduates will be better prepared for their professional careers. Support from the AECC will enable the Department of Accounting &. Information Systems at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to undertake three innovative projects, a course in communications for accounting undergraduate majors; a winter-term course-to attract new majors to the discipline that succinctly surveys the profession; and a networked accounting classroom that employs an actual firm's data base.
