Abstract This paper reports the results of a nationwide survey of accounting information systems (AIS) faculty. In a three part assessment they: (1) listed in rank order the perceived quality of AIS publication outlets for scholarly refereed and professional refereed journals, (2) compared those publications' quality in relative terms to a benchmark publication, and (3) indicated the perceived value of publishing in those journals on promotion and tenure decisions. The results provided should improve the performance appraisal actions both of directors and chairs of accounting programs and of promotion and tenure committees who may not be familiar with AIS journals. This study differs from previously published faculty perception studies in that only those journals that are potential outlets for AIS/MIS articles were assessed. Forty-two percent of the population of 401 academic members of the IS/MAS special interest group of the AAA responded. Nineteen scholarly journals and 12 professional journals were rated by at least 10 percent of the respondents and are included in the analyses. The results include 13 journals excluded from prior studies, five of which received rankings above the benchmark journal used in those prior studies. AIS research extends beyond the boundaries of traditional accounting, and the consensus of the respondents of this study demonstrates that publishing in journals which focus on any of the underlying paradigmatic fields of AIS can be a valuable contribution to knowledge.
