M-mode echocardiographic parameters in adult sheep correlate significantly with body weight and heart rate, providing baseline reference values for this animal model.
Provides baseline echocardiographic reference values for ovine models; leaves open how these parameters translate to.
SUMMARY M-mode echocardiograms were recorded from 21 adult sheep (20 ewes, 1 whether). Fifteen echocardiographic measurements were taken and compared with body weights or heart rates, using linear regression equations. Significant correlations ( P < 0.05) were found when body weight was compared with left ventricular internal dimensions in systole (Y o = 0.187 X o + 18.60, P < 0.05) and diastole (Y o = 0.346 X o + 26.69, P < 0.02), septal thickness in systole (Y o = 0.0876 X o + 7.64, P < 0.05) and diastole (Y o = 0.0673 X o + 4.45, P < 0.05), aortic root dimension (Y o = 0.129 X o + 23.40, P < 0.05), and left atrial dimension (Y o = 0.194 X o + 15.95, P < 0.005). Heart rate was significantly correlated ( P < 0.05) with body weight (Y o = −0.245 × 96.71, P < 0.05), ejection time (Y o = −0.0013 X o + 0.376, P < 0.001), velocity of circumferential fiber shortening (Y o = 0.0061 X o + 0.928, P < 0.05), mean velocity of mitral valve middiastolic closure (Y o = 0.184 X o + 1.65, P < 0.02), and left atrial dimension (Y o = -0.109 + 40.55, P < 0.005). Fractional shortening of the left ventricle was (mean) 37.2 ± 5.7% and the left atrial to aortic root ratio was (mean) 0.92 ± 0.10.
