Twelve-week HIIT improves VO2max, resting heart rate, and blood pressure in middle-aged women.
Why the study?
Cardiovascular diseases are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in women, especially during middle age, prompting evaluation of high-intensity interval training as a time-efficient strategy to improve cardiovascular fitness.
Does a twelve-week High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) program improve cardiovascular fitness parameters in healthy women aged 40-55 years?
Does a twelve-week High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) program improve cardiovascular fitness parameters in healthy women aged 40-55 years?
A 12-week HIIT program significantly improves surrogate markers of cardiovascular fitness, such as VO₂max and blood pressure, in healthy middle-aged women.
HIIT may improve fitness in middle-aged women; leaves open optimal dosing and long-term outcomes versus standard exercise.
Cardiovascular diseases remain one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among women worldwide, particularly during middle age when physiological and lifestyle changes contribute to increased health risks. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has emerged as a time-efficient and effective exercise strategy for improving cardiovascular fitness and overall health. The present study evaluates the role of HIIT in enhancing cardiovascular fitness among middle-aged women through an experimental intervention. A twelve-week HIIT program was administered to healthy women aged 40–55 years. Cardiovascular fitness parameters including maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂max), resting heart rate, blood pressure, and exercise endurance were assessed before and after the intervention. The findings revealed significant improvements in cardiovascular fitness indicators, including increased aerobic capacity, reduced resting heart rate, improved exercise tolerance, and favorable changes in blood pressure. The study concludes that HIIT is an effective and practical exercise modality for improving cardiovascular health among middle-aged women and may serve as an important strategy for preventing cardiovascular diseases and promoting healthy aging.
