Study examines the relationship between RKV and SPV in Shope papillomas, suggesting RKV acts as a contaminant.
Summary The interaction between rabbit kidney vacuolating virus (RKV) and naturally occurring Shope papillomas was studied. The amount of RKV in these papillomas was unrelated to either the amount of Shope papilloma virus (SPV) present or the histologic papilloma morphology. Immunofluorescence also showed no specific RKV antigen in the tumors. These data agree with previous suggestions that the RKV is a “passenger” or contaminating virus in naturally occurring Shope papillomas. The interaction between SPV and papilloma infections was also examined. The data indicate that the amount of SPV and RKV was unrelated to histologic papilloma morphology.
