Key result
Ischemic HF and extensive CAD linked to shorter survival versus nonischemic HF.
Why the study?
An ischemic etiology of HF predicts adverse outcome, but there is no uniform definition for ischemic cardiomyopathy.
Population
1,921 patients with symptomatic HF and ejection fraction <= 40% undergoing diagnostic coronary angiography
Comparison
Five classification schemes defining the extent of CAD
Design
Cohort study

Modified CAD classification may refine HF prognosis; leaves open effects on management and trial eligibility.
Cohort (n=1,921)
Felker et al. (2002) conducted a cohort in Symptomatic heart failure (n=1,921). Ischemic etiology of heart failure / Extent of coronary artery disease vs. Nonischemic heart failure was evaluated on Survival. Angiographically diagnosed ischemic heart failure and more extensive coronary artery disease were independently associated with shorter survival compared to nonischemic heart failure.
