Reports on the renovation of an old wooden school building, highlighting challenges and solutions for public facilities.
This paper reports on the renovation work carried out to utilize an old wooden school building in Toei-cho, Kitashitara-gun, Aichi Prefecture, and the process leading to its realization. The school building was built around 1955, closed in 2010 and gradually became well known as one of Toei’s tourist attractions. 2024 saw the implementation of work to comply with the Building Standard Law and Fire Prevention Law and for seismic retrofitting, but there were numerous legal, technical, financial and political difficulties leading up to this. Municipalities with similar public facilities can gain useful insights from this experience.
