Experimental modeling assesses dust storm product concentrations in the Aralkum Desert, suggesting implications for environmental studies.
The paper presents the calculation results of the mass concentration of salt-and-sand particles based on field measurements of their number concentration in an artificially generated dust cloud within the Aralkum Desert. Particle fractions with diameters ranging from 0.3 to 10 μm were investigated. The particulate matter parameters were measured using an optical aerosol counter under varying airflow velocities (generated by a blower unit) and underlying surface types, with air temperature, air humidity, and soil moisture kept constant. The authors performed a detailed analysis of the distribution patterns of salt-and-sand particle mass concentration as a function of their size, airflow dynamic characteristics, and the lithological soil type of the dried Aral Sea bed. Based on the empirical data obtained, a quantitative assessment of the potential emission capacity of dust sources was carried out for various landscape types.
