Nationwide survey examines Machiya characteristics in Kanto region, suggesting orientation ties to regional continuity.
The roof-ridge orientation of Machiya varies across settlements, and the number of remaining Machiya continues to decline. As part of a nationwide survey, this study examines the remaining Machiya and their exterior characteristics in the Kanto Region (Tokyo and six prefectures), focusing on the distribution of roof-ridge orientation. The results suggest that the distribution of roof-ridge orientation does not have a direct causal relationship with topography, but is instead attributed to regional continuity.
